Dinosaur day is the Saturday closest to July 17th and it is celebrated by learning about dinosaurs, making dinosaur things, eating dinosaur shaped food items and watching dinosaur movies. I know, I know, it is definitely the best holiday.
I spent Dinosaur Day 2011 with my dinosaur-loving buddy Mallory Jan. We found some toy dinosaurs at the thrift store and it is kind of an unwritten rule that if you find toy dinosaurs on dinosaur day you have to take a picture of it. With your face. You get to chose the mood of the photograph.
Mallory nailed adorable.
I attempted ferocious.
Dinosaurs make people hella craftsy. It is pretty much inexplicable but true. You can go look it up in a book. Mallory made me a super sweet cross-stitch that has probably given her arthritis for the rest of her life.
I made a wooden puzzle because that is all I know to do. I made it like the puzzle from Dinosaur Day 2010 but with the dinosaurs much more densely packed and the pieces cut more finely and precisely. (I fancy I’ve gotten much better at puzzle making since last year.) I even put in a secret message.
Mallory and I also spent some time on Dinosaur Day proper designing and sewing matching stegosaurus crew-necks. Well, I mean, we didn’t actually sew the crew-necks so much as we sewed things onto the crew-necks. Like, for example, super colorful stegosauruses. We drew them and got fabric and cut it and then pieced everything together using a zig-zag stitch and some iron-on.
